Meet Anthony

A Q&A with Uprise artist Anthony Cudahy, currently featured in The Art Dossier Collection:

Where are you from and where do you currently reside?
I am originally from Florida, but now live in Brooklyn.

Where did you hone your skills as an artist?
I suppose while receiving my BFA at Pratt Institute.

Your series in the Uprise Gallery is titled Lost, and you mentioned the work is based on photographs from your parent’s wedding. Can you explain the series and your inspiration for the three works?
They are scenes taken from that wedding, but I don’t really consider the source an integral part of the series. What’s important is that I have no physical contact or memory with the scenes- making them “lost.” I think it’s interesting to paint these type of images, spending a great amount of time considering and trying to make them extend and have solidity. Ultimately the paintings are as ephemeral as the images they are derived from, and that futility interests me. I think that’s part of the piece for me.

Who are some of your favorite artists?
David Lynch, Michael Borremans, Francis Bacon, Tarkovsky.

What is something people would be surprised to discover about you?
This is a hard question, though I have noticed that people almost aggressively disbelieve that I am from Florida. Probably because I’m pale and I’m not sure what accent people expect me to have, but I do not have it.
